Does anyone know of a professional who works with twice exceptional (gifted/LD or ADD) kids in the Chicago area? Tutoring or counseling, or both. Thanks

Does anyone know of a reasonable place to get my dear tested on Long Island? I would prefer it if the tester is of a kinder nature, as dear is very sensitive. Thanks!

Moderator: Not off hand. Have put out feelers, and maybe someone else will post an answer. In the mean time...are you willing to travel? Try looking at Hoagies (see above) and try calling the Gifted Development Center in CO. They keep pretty good lists of who is doing testing, etc. around the country.

Moderator: The two people I have heard of, but have no first-hand knowledge of, are Dr. Janet Jackson in Manhattan and Dr. Julia Osborn in Brooklyn.

I need some good people who have expertise in dual exceptionality. I have an exceptionally gifted child who seems to present with borderline ADD issues (more like attention focus disorder rather than a deficit of attention). I need a psychiatrist to prescribe meds (one who's well versed in gt issues, not just ADD), a therapist and an educational consultant who can work with the schools, all with GT expertise and knowledge.

Moderator: Where are you? What area of the country are you looking for this person in?

I am planning to homeschool my children and suspect that my oldest is gifted in some ways. I am somewhat interested in having him evaluated so that I can tailor his educational/emotional needs better, but do not know if this is necessary and where to turn. I live in Arlington, VA. Thank you!

Moderator: The best reason to evaluate your child is to find out their strengths, weaknesses, and their levels. Sometimes kids we think are "somewhat gifted" are just exactly that, and when educating them, we just need to be aware of what they are really great at, and allow them to follow those passions at their own speed, while at the same time, not expecting them to fly through everything.

On the other hand, if you are planning to homeschool, chances are your child has already proven they are a mismatch with the school system. Sometimes that can be just from personality, but it can also be from extreme giftedness, learning disabilities, attention problems, emotional problems, or many other things. If you are pulling your child out of school because you like the idea of homeschooling, then there may be nothing to it, and evaluation would just help you better choose an appropriate educational direction with your child. But if, in your heart of hearts you know there is something going on besides your educational philosophy, and if you don't know what it is, then evaluation can be very useful.

For evaluation of the highly gifted who might have other, confounding exceptionalities, I highly recommend John Wasserman, Ph.D., presently at GMU. If you are looking for someone to consult with who is familiar with homeschooling highly gifted children in VA, I recommend Rebecca Watson in the Woodbridge/Dale City area.

Finally, if you are local, you are welcome to call me directly.

I am looking for a counselor for my 16 year old gifted teenager. He has a tested IQ of about 145. He scored a 1070 on the SAT in 7th grade. He was an excellent student until the 8th grade when his grades began to decline. He is currently a high school junior and had to drop one course because he was failing and is close to failing a few other courses this year. I am looking for a counselor in the Poughkeepsie, NY area.

Please call me directly, or email me at gifted@shulamit.info. Writing on this board does not send me your email address, or anything else I can use to contact you. But from your description, I fully agree that your son is having a problem that is connected to his giftedness.

If anyone knows of a counselor in that area of NY, please do post.

My highly gifted 8 year old displays ritualistic behaviors. They don't get in the way too often. But, she is having a hard time getting to sleep, staying asleep and putting herself back to sleep. When she awakens, she can have a "OCD-like" session that includes tears for up to 2 hours. This began 2 years ago when she gave up her self soothing pacifier up during bedtime. I do need the right help for her. We have tried music, imagery, breathing, etc. I do not want to medicate my 8 year old. Please direct me. Thank you.

Hi - I am finding out that I may be giffted and have never known... a friend suggested that I was - and I have been doing quite a bit of research on the subject. I'd like to see a professional in my area. I do not want to go to someone who is not familiar with giftedness because I do not want to be quickly dismissed and misdiagnosed, if you know what I mean. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am in the St. Petersburg Florida area, and wondered if anyone may know of a gifted adult therapist in this area? I would appreciate any information that you may have. Also wondered if anyone has seen a counselor that did their sessions over the phone instead of in person, and if so, how did you like this method of therapy? I was asking because I found someone that is on the internet, that I could do therapy with and he seems like a nice guy, I am just one who thinks that maybe it is better in person, when it is more personal. Thanks

i I am looking for a GT Adult therapist in my area, I was diagnosed if you will as a child. I have struggled all my life with the intensity of my emotions, and thoughts. It was not until I was lead to this book by Mary Elaine Jacobsen, The Gifted Adult, that I realized what had been going on with me all this time. I feel liberated, yet I still feel like I don't know what to do with this information. I just remember my parents always saying "Once they told her she was smart, she just stopped doing anything". I now know why, and want to get some type of help to work through all of this. My e-mail address is tata_rainey@hotmail.com and if there is anyone that knows of a gifted adult counselor or therapist in the St. Petersburg Florida area. I would really appreciate any feedback

Looking for a gifted specialist for an almost 7 year old girl in the San Francisco Bay Area--North Bay preferably. Highly gifted/even profoundly--perfectionist, like a walking nerve almost because I think she feels/thinks more than those her age or even I can understand. Runs in family paternal side--looking for someone who really understands profoundly gifted children as well as the impact on family dynamics/relationships with peers & siblings.

Dear Shulamit, In this first correspondence I do not want to give detailed information in order not to take your time; but if there would be a help for my son I will provide them. We live in Turkey now but my son is a US citizen (born in US while we were there). He is 6 and attending a kindergarten of a well known private school. He began reading 2,5 years old, he is advanced also in the other cognitive areas. He may have musical talent but we could not do anyting because of the economical reasons (global crisis). We did not experience social and emotional difficulties before (he was in a little nursery for 2 years), but some began to emerge while in school. He is boring very much also. He will taketook IQ test (WISC-R) 2 weeks ago and it was told that for verbal part he is on 150 something and for performance part 130 something (as a parent they won't tell the exact number and about the subtests). For me the "number" has meaning only if it will help my son's "placement" in school and among his friends, since I think, he needs special environment and applications appropriate for him. Here in Turkey there is no school for gifted children (one school announced that it will open a special class this year but I have suspects about the schools overall professionalim), in schools it is nearly impossible to advocate and expect curriculum changes (ex.his curret school has a very good reputation, it is involved in PYP-MYP-IB system. But they haven't any recognition for gifted children. It is very well structured and organized that specialities, changes and parental input seem to be unwelcomed). Are there any chance for my son to continue his education in US by using some fascillities concerning his citizenship. (We had been in NY for working reasons with my husband and we have a relative still there.) I will appreciate if you can give me advice. (I did the online test in your site and if you need any additional info I will please to give them.) Thank you in advance.
